Denny Crum's 1996-1997 team entered the season unranked in the AP Poll. However, that didn't last long after the Cardinals won their first 10 games including 3 in overtime which saw them rise all the way to #6 in the polls. A late season 3 game losing streak dropped them out of the top 10 but not out of the NCAA Tournament. After going 23-8 in the regular season, Louisville entered the NCAA Tournament as the #6 seed in the East Region and a first round matchup with #11 UMass.
