The Grand Rapids Owls originally started as an IHL team in the 1970s. They were nomads somewhat, starting off in Columbus, then Dayton, before finding their way to Grand Rapids. They moved mid-season in 1978-79 from Dayton to Grand Rapids, and despite the turbulence, went all the way to the IHL Finals in '79. The team would go out of business after the 1979-80 season but would be re-born many years later as a junior team in the early 00s.

The Huntington Blizzard started play in 1993-94 in Huntington, WV, at the Huntington Civic Center (now Mountain Health Arena). The team sported a unique purple and blue color scheme and was the first pro hockey team in Huntington since the IHL's Huntington Hornets left town in 1957. The Blizzard had a tough first year, winning only 14 of 68 games. Year two saw an improvement, with a 28-37 record that would earn them a trip to the playoffs.
